From 22-24 October, Framer Framed invites you to When the roots start moving, a series of public programs on Zapatismo imaginary and pedagogy by Russian activist collective CHTO DELAT. Based on CHTO DELAT’s extensive research and practice, which adopts Zapatismo as a lens for self-reflection, this series offers a space for discussions of solidarity, alternative imagination, and emancipatory tools in contexts of social and ecological crisis.

Video commentary to the installation “Slow orientation in Zapatism” – Chto Delat’s contribution to “And if I devoted my life to one of its feathers?” includes a textile map and a film based on the collective’s interactions with the Zapatista Army of National Liberation while visiting the Mexican state of Chiapas. These works engage the recent past, the present, and also possible futures through mise-en-scénes that generate aesthetic experiments to test the possibilities of art, as a reality and dimension of its own, in extreme conditions. “And if I devoted my life to one of its feathers?” 15/5 – 26/9 2021, Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier A joint exhibition with Wiener Festwochen, curated by Miguel A. López.

On the occasion of the opening of “And if I devoted my life to one of its feathers?”, we had the opportunity to speak with members of the collectives Chto Delat and Zapantera Negra about different social movements and the urgency of the current political moment. To connect art to political movements and to engage with political solidarity is demonstrated in both of their art practices. Together the artists discuss different aspects of strong images but also the importance of narrative language in visual culture.
